How do Albuquerque assisted living facilities set their prices?
Most quote either a single all-inclusive monthly rate, common in small licensed homes, or a base rent for the apartment plus a care-level fee based on the assessment, common in larger communities, with separate charges for things like medication management, incontinence care or a second occupant.
New Mexico's 2025 statewide median for assisted living is $5,950 a month (CareScout). No Albuquerque median is published, so line up written quotes from three or four facilities at the same care level.
What must a New Mexico assisted living contract say about cost?
Under 8.370.14.20 NMAC the admission agreement must state the cost of services and method of payment and the refund provision in case of death, transfer, or voluntary or involuntary discharge, and the facility must give 30 days' written notice of any change in cost or material services.
Read the refund clause before signing. Some agreements prorate the final month; others keep a notice-period charge. Both can be lawful, but the agreement must say which.
How should you plan for assisted living rate increases?
Assume the monthly cost will rise over time, both through annual increases and through higher care-level fees as needs grow, and ask each facility for its increase history over the last few years and for its care-level price sheet in writing.
The 30-day notice rule gives you time to compare options before an increase takes effect, but it does not cap the amount.
Which assets do Albuquerque families use to pay for assisted living?
Families usually combine Social Security and pension income with savings, the sale or rental of the family home, long-term care insurance benefits and, for eligible veterans and surviving spouses, the VA pension with Aid and Attendance.
If a home sale is part of the plan, ask a tax professional about timing; selling before or after a move can change both taxes and eligibility for public programs later.
When should a private-pay family start planning for Medicaid?
As soon as you can estimate that savings will run out within two or three years: that is the time to ask the Aging and Disability Resource Center (1-800-432-2080) about the Community Benefit Central Registry and to ask facilities whether they accept Turquoise Care Community Benefit residents.
Some facilities that accept private pay do not contract with any Turquoise Care plan, which can force a move later. When the money is running out →
